Why having a business plan is important

Starting a business, or taking that next big step to grow your business, is an exciting venture – but it can also be pretty daunting! A critical part of keeping your business on a pathway to success is having a good business plan in place.  Just how critical is highlighted by research which showed that businesses that set goals and track their progress grow 30 percent faster than those who “just wing it.” Furthermore, even established businesses grow faster when they have an effective plan.

A good business plan will provide clarity, direction and a path for reaching your goals. It can help you identify and track the assets, resources and opportunities available to you and what potential challenges may arise. A business plan also allows you to share your vision with others, so they understand what it will take to start, launch or move your enterprise forward.

A more robust and detailed plan may be necessary if you seek investment or financing. But a shorter, ‘lean’ format could be more useful and less time-consuming if you’re just testing an idea.

What a good business plan can help you to achieve?

Secure funding for your business

Arguably, one of the primary purposes of a business plan is to help your business secure the funding that you need to operate and grow. Potential investors and lenders will want to see a well-written business plan that clearly outlines the market opportunity, the competitive landscape, your team’s qualifications, and the financial projections for your business.

The business plan should also highlight the potential risks and how they will be mitigated. A well-crafted business plan can increase the chances of securing funding and help businesses negotiate better terms.

Guide your business operations

A well-crafted business plan provides a framework for decision-making and can help businesses stay on track. It outlines the business’s goals and objectives and the steps needed. It also provides a blueprint for the sales and marketing strategy, including the target market, positioning, and pricing. A business plan can help a company focus on its core values and mission.

Evaluate progress towards your business goals

A business plan gives you a benchmark for your company’s expected performance. It outlines the key performance indicators (KPIs) a business needs to track to determine its success. The business plan may also outline the milestones and timelines for achieving the KPIs. By monitoring progress, a business can identify areas for improvement and make necessary adjustments to stay on track.

Business planning next steps

I already have a business plan in place. Now what?

That's great that you are already thinking about your business pathway to success. It's important that your business plan remains at front of mind, and you check in periodically to see how you are going.

A common fallacy is thinking that business plans are only important in the start-up phase of a business. They are in fact important at any stage. Checking back in on your plan on a monthly, or quarterly basis will enable you to review the accuracy of the KPI and financial assumptions made in your plan and to tweak these where necessary to stay on track.

Overtime, your initial business plan may transition into an internal plan that provides a reference to how your business is tracking to its tactical and strategic objectives. We are here to help with this transitional process if you need a hand.
